Reminiscence therapy
Dementia isn't a specific disease but multiple conditions may lead to this problem. This is most commonly seen in age-old unless one is met with a severe head injury in their early life. Oxford defines Dementia as a condition characterized by progressive or persistent loss of intellectual functioning, especially with impairment of memory and abstract thinking, and often with personality change, resulting from organic disease of the brain.
Let’s see how the medical field is trying to overcome this problem. One of the therapies that is famous nowadays for dementia is Reminiscence therapy. Here the person talks about his past or tries to identify the pictures that were captured in his/her times. This helps to stimulate the memory area of brain cells and also relieves stress and enhances the mood of the individual. This therapy was found to be effective in behavioral changes of patients suffering from dementia.
The authors concluded that there is some evidence that RT can improve quality of life, cognition, communication, and possibly mood in people with dementia in some circumstances, although all the benefits were small. Further research is needed to understand these differences and to find out who is likely to benefit most from what type of RT(randomized trial).
Anyways it’s a growing behavioral technique that might be appreciated in the future.
